Problem Statement

Greenhouse gas emissions from transport are mainly caused by long-distance passenger transport and by freight traffic. With regard to passenger transport, it can be seen that long-distance travel is increasing, in contrast to everyday travel. At the same time, only a fragmentary empirical data basis is available to describe and explain long-distance travel. With regard to freight transport, there are gaps, especially with regard to the decision-making processes for the choice of transport mode.

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to identify strategies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by long-distance transport. In more detail, the aim is to provide findings for the support of both sustainable passenger transport mobility and sustainable freight transport.

Methods

Together with other partners, the Institute for Transport Studies is mainly involved in the compilation of consistent and compatible statistics on passenger travel of the German population and the delimitation of the travel volumes caused by everyday and long-distance travel.The results serve as basis for the further development of environmental policy measures in long-distance transport.
